I guess this means that my professional development should be done in my own time at home and not at work over lunch!
It is difficult to reconcile the fact that library authorities require that staff keep abreast of 'e-developments' to enable them to help customers when the IT infrastructure within the libraries do not support the use of social media like Twitter, Blogger, Google Docs because the browser is out of date.
I only can agree. Maybe you can - together with others - convince the responsibles. An additional argument is the fact that modern browser version offer a better service concerning safe and secure surfing.

Urgh, tell me about it. We've only just had Firefox installed so we can update our Current Awareness blogs. Twitter is banned for all but the Communications team who use it in a frustratingly one-sided conversation way. How are staff supposed to engage with social media if you ban it all! I am jealous of people who work in universities - nothing was banned for me when I was a library assistant!
